James Morrison interview

With the release of his third studio album ‘The Awakening’ reaching number one in the charts, James Morrison is enjoying the success of being an international superstar. As preparations begin for his 2012 tour, James talks about his new album, his plans for Christmas and how life is always full of surprises.

Virgin Red Room: Your latest track with Jessie J is a big hit - anyone in the pipeline for future duets?

James Morrison: There’s nobody in the pipeline at the moment. I love to work with other people, but at the moment I’m content working with Jessie on the current song. But who know what might happen?

Virgin Red Room: How would you describe your latest album and how is it different to others?

James Morrison: I would describe my album as an autobiographical album with different characters from soul, folk, blues and pop rock. It is the same kind of style to my previous albums, but just presented in a more simple way. It’s definitely the best one out of the three because it’s my most personal yet.

Virgin Red Room: It’s very tough out there. How did you break into the industry?

James Morrison: I really don’t like that word. I got into playing music for a living on an international level by being prepared for the opportunity and being in the right place at the right time. That’s it!

Virgin Red Room: Have you been watching this series of the X Factor?

James Morrison: No, I’ve been away quite a lot.

Virgin Red Room: So do you not have a favourite?

James Morrison: Yeah, my favourite was Misha B – she’s got a great voice.

Virgin Red Room: How will you be spending Christmas this year?

James Morrison: At home with my family getting drunk and stoned on love.

Virgin Red Room: I’m glad you said ‘love’ at the end of that sentence. So, you’ve got the tour coming up in the New Year. Will there be any surprises?

James Morrison: Life always has surprises, so I’m sure there will be. At this point it’s too early to say, but yes, I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve.

Virgin Red Room: Before you became a singer did you have any terrible jobs?

James Morrison: My worst job was washing vans in Derby. I worked six days a week 8am – 7pm in the freezing cold with a bunch of guys that were that were always trying to find ways of making the job a lot more difficult.

Virgin Red Room: If you didn’t make it, what do you think you would be doing right now?

James Morrison: I would still be playing music I think. I’d play pubs and if that didn’t work I would be a self-employed gardener or something.

Maybe he could’ve done both!
