If you're one that checks blogs for new music, chances are you've watched a live session from a band playing songs in a courtyard, an elevator, a cab, or on the roof of a building. Popular sites like La Blogotheque (which feature the Take Away Shows) and Black Cab Sessions have been doing this for quite a while now, taking big name indie bands (like the Arcade Fire, The Shins, Peter Bjorn and John) and having them perform in impromptu situations. What the viewer gets is an interesting spin on their favorite songs which really feels intimate.
You might not know yet about Southern Souls, which sprouted up just months ago. Based out of Hamilton, Ontario (Canada), Mitch Fillion has been collecting performances of the most prolific active musicians from Southern Ontario in out-of-character locales. Every street, park, or city bus is a potential venue. Inspired by the Take Away Shows and Black Cab Sessions, it aims to show that music (and its makers) are everywhere. So far, the site has hosted great sessions from Canadian bands Mother Mother, Ohbijou, The Rest, and Pitchfork approved Diamond Rings. Start following the site, they're doing some pretty great things.
Here's Young Rival performing an untitled song in an alleyway, reminding us that you can't always plan for traffic.
