Boy Kid Cloud's top 5 mixtapes
- Aug 01, 2012
Mixtapes are a good way of letting a listener in on your playlists. A personal way of showing what excites you about music. My interest in mixtapes comes from House, a genre that relies on mixtapes to show others on-going work and new tracks. I like the idea that with a mixtape you can put exclusive unreleased tracks in them without the danger of people rippin’ them - if you mix quick enough that is.
Boy Kid Cloud – Now Then and Again Mixtape
I made a new mixtape just last weekend before I moved house. This selection of tunes is made up from many songs that I have adored over the years. Songs that are old, new and exciting that I’ve played a million times over and make me happy.
1. Foamo - The Fat! Club Mix 001
Foamo is an artist I have listened to from his first mix and first releases a few years ago. Myself and a big group of people from my town were playing this sound and this mix sums up the sound at the time for me. Foamo was one of the first artists who released monthly mixtapes monthly, I really like that idea.
2. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs Dj Mix
TEED is such a brilliantly minded person. I played a gig with him over two three years ago in London at a little cabin-like, pub type place when I was playing drums for a band called Tired Irie. His set was like nothing I had ever seen and I absolutely loved it. I’ve always kept up to date with his music since then and a big fan of the tracks in this mix too.
3. Butterz & Hardrive 3 - Terror Danjah, Riko Dan, Skepta, Jme & Shorty (BBK)
Grime has always played a massive part in my musical upbringing and I think over the years a lot of artist have either disappeared or gone pop and failed or whatever, but this mix is just a testament to how the genre is still well and truly alive and still incredibly exciting as ever.
4. Logan Sama's After hours with Scrufizzer, 2Face & Teeza
This mix is mixed by a DJ that is most of the reason grime is still alive. Logan Sama's 'Kiss' show has showcased the majority if not all of grime’s biggest names and is the epicentre of the genre today. Logan's attitude towards pushing a scene of music with all his heart is inspiring.
5. KOAN Sound's Knowledge Magazine Mix
I'll never forget the first time I heard KOAN sound's max out EP. I was in a car on the way to play Glade Festival and it’s the only music I’ve ever bought on iTunes. I burnt it to CD and said to my friends who I was with in the car with, got this KOAN Sound EP last night haven’t listened shall we see if it’s any good?”...Nobody spoke throughout the four tracks and we just put it back to track 1 and played it again...and again. They bought something (Glitch Hop) up a level and made it their own. They are MASSIVELY talented people and deserve everything they get.
