10 bands to watch at Field Day 2010
- Jul 27, 2010
London parks are almost more music festival than they are park at this time of year, with Hackney’s Victoria Park a prime location for misadventure and live music. Field Day makes its fourth outing this year with a strong indie and electro cast descending on the village fete themed extravaganza.
Take on Mark E Smith in the egg and spoon race, buy some organic jam, challenge Lightspeed Champion in the tug of war (easy win there), milk a cow or don’t and just listen to some music and get sunburnt. It’s up to you. Here are 10 bands to watch at Field Day 2010.
10. Gilles Peterson
If you missed WOMAD festival last weekend, then fear not! For the worldly Londoner with Swiss and Parisian roots, Gilles Peterson, will be bringing you the finest jazz and World Music this side of...well, wherever World Music comes from.
9. Archie Bronson Outfit
Ah, the Village Mentality Stage...coconut shys, cup cakes, cow milking and the Archie Bronson Outfit. Sure, it seems a strange stage for psychedelic garage rock, but the trio are well worth a watch and a listen during your game of tug of war.
8. Lightspeed Champion
Hot producer, good singer, published author and all round good chap Dev Hynes, aka Lightspeed Champion brightened up a dreary day with his performance at Field Day in 2008. Expect him to do the same - no matter the weather - this time around.
7. Yuck
The new project of some of the boys from Cajun Dance Party are releasing their EP on cassette. Let's face it, no one owns a cassette player. So the only time to hear what they sound like will be to see them live.
6. Moderat
German electronica veterans will be bringing their catchy beats to East London for what will be a set that should provide a few surprises.
5. Carte Blanche
As far as side project names go this is a crap one, however don’t be put off, as the sounds being emitted by DJ Medhi and Riton’s new outfit should be anything but dull. Their appearance at Field Day will signal the end of an epic summer tour, in which the vastly experienced electro pairing have been able to air their excellent debut EP ‘Black Billionaires’.
4. Caribou
Festival favourites Caribou will be certain to draw one of the biggest crowds of the day on the Eat Your Own Ears stage. Summer days and festivals are what this band were made for. Essential listening.
3. These New Puritans
The Southend art rockers continue to stay wafer thin, casually wear chain mail and churn out infectious indie beats. Wielding their instruments with a touch more purpose than many of their contemporaries this is a band with a future ahead of them.
2. Fake Blood
If you haven’t found yourself sweating away on the dancefloor while a Fake Blood track blasts its way out the speakers then you haven’t spent enough time on dancefloors, shame on you. If you do fall into this sorry category then there is the perfect chance for redemption as the blisteringly effective electro DJ makes a welcome appearance on the Bugged Out! Stage.
1. The Fall
Two good bits of news rolled into one here. One of the countries best bands are playing Field Day and with Mark E Smith in attendance you are unlikely to be the most drunk person at the festival. The band are in fine form at the moment, having just released the much celebrated Your Future, Our Clutter.
Tickets for Field Day can still be found, along with everything else Field Day-related over at the festival website. Enjoy.
Jack Preston and Dan Rumens
