Richard Branson forced to abandon kitesurf
- Aug 24, 2010
Richard Branson was forced to abandon his attempt to kitesurf across the Channel today due to adverse weather conditions - and immediately vowed to try again tomorrow.
The kitesurf was arranged to mark Richard Branson's 60th birthday and he was joined by a team including his children Holly and Sam for the event.
Richard Branson was the first kitesurfer to enter the sea at Dungeness in Kent, but was advised to turn back due to dangerous weather conditions five miles into the 24.4 mile crossing.
This was due to the rough seas and high winds making it difficult for support boats to continue, and it was deemed unsafe for the kitesurfers to carry on unaided.
Richard Branson said: "I don't think I've ever done an adventure where I've succeeded the first time.
"I'm looking forward to getting the job done tomorrow."
The kitesurfers are expected to attempt the Channel crossing again tomorrow at 10am. Follow their progress on Virgin Active, Virgin.com and Twitter.
