Know your value

Today's guest blog explores the importance of entrepreneur's knowing their worth...

Time. It really is the greatest asset that we own and how we use it determines our future. However, it scares me as to how many people don’t value or respect their own time or other people’s.

I was once invited to a meeting with an individual and so we agreed a date and a location. I arrived at the location 15 minutes early, sat down, got a coffee and waited for him to arrive. 30 minutes passed and no arrival. One hour passed and still no arrival or even a text, phone-call or email to explain why. It had taken me an hour to get to the location and an hour back. All in all, four hours of my time were invested into this meeting.

I got back to the office and had an invoice raised and sent to the individual for the sum of £400. The individual called me straight up and queried the charges. I proceeded to tell him that I value my time at £100 per hour and he had used four hours of my time traveling and attending a meeting that he didn’t show up at, without even notifying me as to a reason why he couldn’t attend.

My point here is simple. If you do not value your time, people will take it for granted and not value it either. If individuals know that your time is precious and that you place a value upon it, you will receive the respect you deserve. He didn’t pay the invoice, but he was never late again.
