The recently released Nielsen Social Media Report 2012 is full of fascinating facts and figures, which are helping further increase understanding of this most powerful of tools.

1. 82% - Time spent on mobile apps has rocketed up in the past year, with the US seeing an increase of well over 50%. The increase in smartphone ownership has been the key driving factor behind this shift.
2. 171.8 million The unique US audience for social networking has increased by 8.2 million in the past 12 months.
3. 1,255,225,000 The time spent, in minutes, on Pinterest by US web users in 2012.
4. 32% - Nearly one third of 18-24 year olds use social networking in the bathroom. Too much information?
5. 76% - Over three quarters describe their feelings as positive after indulging in social networking. The remaining participants were split between negative or neutral emotions.
6. 35-44 Twitter is driving social television. A third of users discuss TV content on the network with the 35-44 year old age range being the most likely to discuss their viewing habits.
7. 1 in 3 - Social care (i.e. customer service via social media) is now a must for all major brands, as nearly half of social media users now engage in social care. A third of people preferring social care to contacting a company by phone.
8. 33% - Advertising on social media can be tricky, with over one third of users agreeing that adverts on social networking sites are more annoying than other online ads.
9. 51% - The amount of people using social networking in the office has also rapidly increased, with over half of 25-34 year olds doing so more than any other group.
10. 95,176,000 v 204,721,000 The numbers of people accessing the internet via a mobile rather than through a PC is far smaller, although the gap is closing.
